The Avian and Exotics Center of Nashville is devoted exclusively to the care of avian and exotic companion animals and clients in need of a facility that caters to the unique needs of these amazing species.

OUR SERVICES

Preventive Care
We provide regular well-animal checkups including assessment of vital signs, wellness blood work and viral screening, visual inspection of skin, coat, teeth, nails, feathers, etc., intestinal parasite screening and vaccinations as needed to prevent chronic disease.

Emergency/Critical Care /Internal Medicine & Surgery
We handle emergent situations, including acute illnesses and injuries, utilizing our fully-equipped laboratory and operating theatre. Post-operative and recuperative care provided as well.

Orthopedics
We offer specialized care for the unique orthopedic needs of your animal, by treating orthopedic injuries, neurological conditions, and chronic conditions brought about by normal aging. These musculoskeletal and neurologic conditions can result in weakness, pain, decreased range of motion, loss of coordination, decreased endurance and difficulty with normal daily activities.

Geriatric Care
Many avian species can live for 80 years or more. Our staff of trained compassionate medical professionals will care for their long-term health addressing specific issues that arise as exotic species age.

Dental Care
Many exotic species have continuously growing teeth that require periodic filing or "floating" to prevent injury to cheek and gums which can result in discomfort and malnutrition. We also offer preventive veterinary dental care similar to human dental treatments - tartar removal, checking for cavities, gingival pockets, loose teeth, any growths on the gums or palate, removal of diseased teeth, and polishing after tartar removal.

Dermatology
We treat and prevent skin irritations including dry, itchy, hot, red, rough, scaly, chapped and cracked skin which can result from skin conditions such as rashes, hot spots, hives, dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis and other conditions occurring in exotic animal populations caused by external parasites such as mites, lice, and fleas.

Pre- & Post-Purchase Examinations
Pre-purchase exams for pet stores and private breeders on new additions to check health status before adding to healthy colonies/aviaries. Post-purchase exams for new owners to insure purchase of healthy viral-free pets and a long life for their new companion.

Grooming
Recommended at least every 3-6 months, a correct wing trim in relation to the size of your bird will not allow flight but will allow a soft landing in case they should fall. Beak trims are important to counteract beak overgrowth thus facilitating proper nutrition by allowing for normal prehension and intake of food. Nail trims will allow proper perching and balance and will decrease the occurrence of foot chewing, ulcers on the feet, infection or "bumblefoot", and arthritis as your bird ages
